My teenagers wanted to see the 2024 Eclipse totality, and we are from West Virginia. I wanted to avoid traffic and a lot of people, so I opted for Amish Country area, and chose the Marsh because the photos showed wide open spaces. Beautiful drive out Ohio's county roads. We aimed for Old Truss Bridge. There are two small places to park. One is earlier on in the road and a lil walk to the bridge, but there's also parking next to the bridge. The marsh still had some high water, so we took off our shoes and socks and waded through it. The water was so cold. Squishy mud. We hiked barefoot out the land bridge toward the center near a murder-flock-grind of red-winged blackbirds. We then regretted not bringing chairs. We played Total Eclipse of the Heart on our phone. Then we enjoyed comfy nature sounds. Sometimes you couldn't tell if it was a frog or bird chirping around you. You could hear the fish tap the water's surface. When the totality struck, you could hear these duck duck gooses hollerin like it's the end, which contributed to the atmosphere as the entire marsh grew dark, with the four of us, out in the middle of it, barefoot. Fredericksburg nearby had a couple nice eating establishments, but we ended up taking a different route home and got Dairy Queen ice cream.
Great area for nature lovers, lots of water foul and other wildlife to see. There are several roads through the area providing good access with a few parking spots throughout. Public hunting land. In the spring and winter some of the roads can get a little flooded, but with a truck you should be okay. Great areas for Kayaking and some brief hiking.
Great for birds, especially ducks. Saw thousands of pintails, shovelers, and ring-necked ducks, some trumpeter swans and sandhill cranes. Parking areas not marked well but used GPS coordinates from online map to locate. Caution when using GPS on some county roads - some are barely roads at all.
My mom and I love to stroll/drive through here on spring and summer evenings. Quiet and peaceful, and we usually see some ducks, ducklings, the eagle, herons, and other birds and wildlife especially in the spring.
Great area to be to see wildlife of all kinds. Every time we go we see giant birds who have caught fish, and it's just incredible to watch them in their nature habitat. This area just seems so wild, and untouched. There's also a lot of frogs and turtles, and there were quite a bit of deer the sides of the roads. Flash flooding is a big problem, though, and it makes some of the roads unavailable for periods of time.
One of my favorite places around. Go down cemetery road and take the scenic route. So many birds and if you're watching or going slow, you can sometimes see turtles. Only problem is that it is one of the first places to flood so you can't always get down there.
This is a beautiful place to visit. If you would like to hike, do not go to the official location instead go to this pin: Near 8401-8707 Township Hwy 76, Shreve, OH 44676 That will allow you to find a nice place to hike and explore! You can search for all the abandoned vehicles too!
Absolutely beautiful wildlife preserve with gravel roads and random trails. Spring is coming and the birds are back. The noise from all the birds against the sound of waves is so refreshing after a long winter.
