This place is beautiful and very peaceful. I remember many years ago coming here fishing with my Mom and grandma. Sad to not have the reservoir but understand why. Now visiting again thanks to my nephew! Enjoy the tranquility, and will be back to visit soon!!
Beautiful nature area! wide variety of animals to see. Access is a little difficult. No real trails or anything. Just kinda make your own way through. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area
I was sorry to see that the reservoir is drained. That was the main reason for going. I did go to one of the ponds and was happy that I did. It was peaceful and I was able to enjoy a small part of the wildlife area.
Went to watch the 4/8/24 eclipse as did many others. It was a lovely day. I was hoping for a couple trails to walk but no luck. This is more of a sanctuary & great for birders.
The Killdeer Upground Reservoir located in the southwest corner of the Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area, was decommissioned and drained about 20 years ago. What remains is a magnificent walkway along the top of what was the dam around the reservoir. Magnificent because it provides a breathtaking view of what has become a series of shallow ponds and a landscape of tall grass and shrubs. Beware, the cut on the west wall of the dam, created to ensure that the dam could never refill. It is steep and often muddy. Wear hiking boots. Aside from that and a few other muddy spots (only muddy following recent rain), the views from each side are fantastic and all in all it is a very enjoyable 2 1/2 mile walk around.
Not a high invasion of people, the wildlife is plenty if you have patience, patience is the key to success when you are a wildlife photographer. Access is plentiful, just stay out of restricted areas.
Was there for the solar eclipse..it was awesome..first the crickets ..then the toads..then the birds and owls..
So far we've only explored the drained reservoir. What an oddity. I wish there were more mowed paths and it were clearer where you could and could not go. Overall, it's worth checking out. We'll be doing some research and heading back again.
