I've passed by the sign for Mackey Ford Wildlife Area many times and didn't give it much thought. Over the past few months I've noticed construction and more cars at the Scioto River Access road. I decided to see for myself and I was surprised by how nice it is. There is a decent size parking area, an access ramp into the river, and some trails along the river and some a little distance away from the river that are very scenic.
There is a none powered boat ramp on the Scioto that is accessible through the nature preserve.
Very peaceful and surprisingly not crowded at all. I didn't see anyone. I saw a beaver for the first time in my entire life. It was getting dark and I thought it was a dog and almost pet it. Awesome.
Its better than nothing... Crimes down now and there is cobbled boat drop... But You arent even legally able to use it for a car (nobody is around to enforce it). To call it a wildlife area is a stretch. The water stinks of alkalinity and there is garbage everywhere. Its again better than nothing but it could use some work. Either let it naturalized completely or finish construction. Don't stop between with infrastructure that you make off limits and barren land.
This wildlife area get a lot of hunting pressure.. They had a nice Dove field in 2017... I feel that the hurricanes that came up through Ohio ran the bird numbers down..
Its a swampy area so mosquitoes are bad right now. But for the city its closes place to hunt. Its well protected cops are around there often also.
Pretty nice place with a well defined fishing trail, it's there when the river isn't up high
Off the beaten path. Nature is a great learning tool. However, adult trash was evident on the ground under the bridge.
