Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge

Bethel, AK
Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge

Description

Alaska's Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge is vast and productive. The refuge nestles between Alaska’s largest rivers, the Yukon and the Kuskokwim Rivers, where the tundra meets the Bering Sea. Its diversity of habitats support one of the largest aggregations of waterbirds in the world. The hundreds of miles of rivers and streams provide critical spawning and rearing habitat for Pacific salmon species. Drier upland habitats harbor populations of brown and black bears, caribou, moose, wolves, and muskox. Along the coast, the Bering Sea waters host various marine mammals, including whales that pass during migration. This landscape is the ancestral home of the Yup’ik, Cup’ik, and Deg Xit'an people of Alaska. This is a region rich in culture, where residents depend on resources to support an active subsistence way of life. The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta is among the most populated rural areas in Alaska, with over 50 Indigenous communities.

I live in Bethel, which is on the Wildlife Reserve. It's very quiet outside of town. Most of the moose live north.

I only pass through here if I am going back home to Newtok (Mertarvik) or if I’m going to my other home Anchorage. Always nice to see my people here greeting me with their kindness and I always love eating at any type of restaurant that serves sushi or fried rice. If love to learn Bethel one day because I get lost here n there and the cabs are crazy! One time during the winter time I was headed to the super from Bentley’s, the cab driver decided to drive in the frozen river and from there I started to realize that it was normal because other cars were doing it. Had a lot of great memories here, you just need a lot of money because everything here is real expensive, I’m talking AC expensive.

Well, as usual, it's really a great place to go. Any season...it is a place to go to recover, to just be. Because, so far, it's pretty much in it's pristine condition. The birds have begun to arrive for the nesting season. The hunters are out enjoying their time. The greens are beginning to grow. It was awesome, as usual.
