A place to find plant fossils from late cretaceous period, about 65 million years old. You can't miss them, they're everywhere in the loose shale. Bring pickaxes for fun but it's not necessary since the rock breaks apart easily. There are also remnants of coal from mining days. Warning: the road is treacherous and you must have 4 wheel drive to make it. Even that was dodgy for our truck, but we did it. There is a little pond that's deep right against the bank and overhang with fish jumping.

Easy to find, 4wd recommended to drive to the lake, easy short walk if driving a car. Find fossils of leaves and ferns very easily. Just look at the rocks that have fallen down the embankment.

Absolutely love this place. My family has been coming here for over 15 years. There are many trails for hiking and 4- wheeling. If you enjoy looking for fossils, this is a great place to do it. There are also plenty of fish in the lakes.

Neat place to visit with kids who are into geology and fossils! Came with my sons class on a field trip, I was shocked how many fossils we found! The gathering area above the lake is littered with clay targets, casings, and other garbage.

My children went on a field trip with their 2nd grade class. Adventurous day with 100 kids . So much to explore and find.

Not as many fish as 2 years ago same date. Maybe lake not stocked during pandemic? Walked in. Greated by a friendly dog who followed us to the lake. The dog kept jumping in the lake and biting our line when cast. This dog prevented us from catching ANYTHING. I think the dog was trained to prevent non-locals from catching fish. Fossils not as plentiful as before.

Fossil hunting is awesome up here! Just hope people can respect the area. Bring a trash bag and help out!
