Texas to a T. I want you to fully understand what you are looking at…What you have here is over 60yrs of meticulous wildlife and ecosystem mgmt. Best WMA I have ever been to. The beauty was breathtaking. The facilities were top notch. The staff was flawless. This place rocks! Makes me proud to call Texas home.
Came here for a drawn youth hunt. The park is nice and beautiful, most of the staff were great. The hunting blinds were great. However, my 9 year old was on his first real deer hunt and was so excited. The hunt was antlerless and spikes only. We sat out in our area all day and finally saw a small deer way out across the field towards dusk. It was so far away it was very hard to tell what it was. He zoomed the scope in and checked, he thought that it met the requirements for the hunt. He shot and hit it, I couldn't believe he hit it. He is 9, never shot any big game before, and on this long shot, hit it the first time. He was the most excited little boy you have even seen. We walked up to it, and he then realized it had a fork on one side. Even though it still met TPWD requirements for a spike, this park didn't want a fork on either side. He was devastated and started crying. I told him it was OK and we would go talk to the park staff. The park staff did not fine us (thank you) but did not act nice about it. He was taking pictures of it, sending them to someone and kept walking away from us to have hush conversations to someone on the phone. He then told us we couldn't have it but told us we had to skin it and leave it with him. He then cut the head off and told us to skin it. He never asked if we wanted pictures with it or if this was the child's first deer, he just acted like we were some kind of law breaking people. He then went to the next kid who had a deer, asked if it was their first, which it was and proceeded to take pictures and fill out their first big game paperwork. This was all just rubbing salt in the wound for my child. I wish the TPWD staff could have seen how hurtful that was to a little child who had just shot their first deer and already felt terrible for breaking the park rules by accident. I hope it hasn't ruined hunting for him forever.
For the past 20 year this is my home away from home. We used to get drawn on the hunts every year but since the state has opened up to where you can put in for the same hunt on multiple units it's difficult to get drawn. This is a beautiful place. It is one of my favorite places to hunt, but by far the most difficult place I've ever hunted. I'm always up for a good challenge though. This is a place that if you haven't put in long hours in the field scouting, chances are you won't even see any animals.
Great piece of nature. Close to civilization but feels like being in the deep wilderness.
I almost hate to rate this place because then people might start going. We love the quiet seclusion of Gus Engeling. We love taking nature walks here or just sitting in a field to see what crosses your path. It is closed in the winter and restricted during hunting seasons to allow the hunters to do their thing. But we just love the natural beauty and wildlife we find here.
Stopped here to use the bathroom and stretch out legs for a bit... Not sure if I was supposed to but I needed to go and when you gotta go you gotta go ... Bathrooms were nice considering out in the middle of nowhere. Hunters camp had several spots for camping... Nicely set up. It was peaceful for the time we were there... I would definitely camp here in the future
Such a hidden gem! Huge park for hunters and hikers! Very secluded and private. Free entry for hikers.
Great place to observe nature.
